Create an Advance Statement
An advance statement is a written record of your preferences for future care. Though not legally binding, it helps your loved ones and care providers understand how you’d like to be supported as the condition progresses.
You may want to include:
- Preferences about care at home versus care homes
- Religious or cultural considerations
- Daily routines or activities that are important to you
Consider an Advance Decision (Living Will)
An advance decision is legally binding. It outlines treatments you wish to refuse in the future, such as resuscitation or artificial feeding. This is particularly helpful if, one day, you’re unable to make these decisions yourself.
Establishing a Power of Attorney
Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf about your health, finances or welfare if you’re unable to. This can provide peace of mind and reduce stress for loved ones later on.
