Waking Night Duty
Waking night duty is where the carer is on call at all times during the night and is awake, alert and making certain the client is sleeping, resting or at least safe, sound and secure.
They would then sleep during the day. If the individual requiring care needs assistance during the day, another carer would need to be employed for the waking hours.
Sleeper Duty
Sleeper duty is where the carer is on hand in the client’s home, ready to be called on for support up to three times per night, for periods of no longer than 30 minutes. A bed is requested for the carer, but you have peace of mind knowing that someone is on hand if required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Overnight care is professional support provided in your own home during the night, tailored to your needs. From scheduled checks to full night-time assistance by a visiting carer, overnight care provides compassionate support during the most difficult hours.
There are typically two options: waking night duty, where a carer stays awake and alert throughout the night, and sleeper duty, where a carer remains on site and responds as needed.
Overnight care is beneficial for individuals who may be at risk of falls, require assistance with toileting or repositioning, have health conditions such as dementia, or simply need reassurance and support throughout the night.
Overnight care enhances safety by mitigating risks such as falls or confusion, provides practical assistance with night time needs, and brings peace of mind to both care recipients and their families.
You can start by contacting Patricia White’s to discuss your requirements, complete a care assessment, and then arrange a bespoke overnight care plan suited to your schedule. We will handle the rest, including carefully matching you with a carer and setting up an introductory call to ensure a good fit.
